Pregnancy includes three trimesters or three time periods. The majority of pregnant women feel differently, both emotionally and physically; depending on which trimester of pregnancy they’re in. Besides body shape and weight, other adjustments in body function and chemistry likewise take place.

In general, your body temperature is usually higher, your heart functions harder, your ligaments and joint might be more flexible, body secretions increase, and your hormones will be all over the place. Getting regular checkups with your ob-gyn here at Capital Women’s Care in Rockville, MD, all throughout your pregnancy will help you prepare for the big day. Meanwhile, here’s what you can generally expect during each pregnancy trimester.

The First Trimester of Pregnancy: Weeks 0 to 13

This is the most critical trimester for your little bean’s development because your baby’s organ systems and body structure develop during this time. Depending on your specific case, you may need to be extra careful because most birth defects and miscarriages also happen during this time. Expect your body to undergo some major changes as well.

These changes usually cause various symptoms like breast tenderness, nausea, frequent urination, and fatigue. Do note though that while these symptoms are common in lots of women, symptoms will still vary from one woman to another. For instance, whiles some women might feel overly emotional and tired, others may feel more energized and calm.

The Second Trimester: Weeks 14 to 26

This period known as the easiest trimester since plenty of the unpleasant symptoms of early pregnancy has passed. You’ll likely feel less nauseated, more energized, and can sleep much better. On the other hand, you may start experiencing new symptoms like heartburn, back pain, constipation, abdominal pain, and leg cramps. But here’s some exciting news. Somewhere around the 16th or 20th week, you might feel the first fluttering movements of your baby.

The Third Trimester: Weeks 27 to 40

This is the home stretch. You’re probably feeling equal parts anxious, excited, and ready to pop. You may also be dealing with sleeping issues, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, shortness of breath, urinary incontinence, and more pronounced back pain. Most of these symptoms occur due to your rapidly increasing uterus and growing baby.
