January is Folic Acid Awareness Month. Women of childbearing age should be taking a folic acid supplement regularly. The recommended amount is 400 micrograms (mcg) daily. Having adequate intake of Folic Acid before becoming pregnant will decrease the risk of birth defects specifically in the baby's brain and spine. For more information on Folic Acid you can visit www.cdc.gov/Features/FolicAcid/. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call your doctors at Capital Women's Care.
